Better not NH at Regionals!!

Unread postby rainbowgirl28 » Fri Feb 25, 2005 3:39 pm

I was reading my latest issue of Track and Field News and noticed this about Regionals...

"Unlike last year, when the rest of the field was filled from the yearly list, so long as the athlete had competed at Regionals, this year, the next 3 placers in each Regional go into an at-large pool of a dozen per event. That placers' list is ordered based on yearly bests."

This sucks for the high jump and pole vault where a NH at Regionals can now eliminate your chances of making it to Nationals.

This also sucks for people from the West Region which has been ridiculously deep compared to the other 3. I think most of the at-large berths have gone to people from that region in the past.

OK, so you both are correct, in a way.

Rainbowgirl is definitely correct that the West has been the deepest in the past two years. OAKPV can claim that the Midwest is second and closing, definitely on the mens side and an interesting argument for the women.

I figured out the depth of each region by adding up the centimeters above or below 4.00 and 5.20. It is not necessary but you can see the differences more clearly.

2003
Centimeters above 4.00

E / ME / MW / W

-31 / 24 / -60 / 28

Centimeters above 5.20

E / ME / MW / W

-19 / 6 / 21 / 66

2004
Centimeters above 4.00

E / ME / MW / W

-4 / -33 / 3 / 8

Centimeters above 5.20

E / ME / MW / W

5 / -15 / 41 / 61
