souleman wrote:Thank you both for the explanation. So basically, if I understand this right, all poles "roll", just some better than others. Ex. My old 15'cat-a-pole, with me holding down 2 1/2 to 3 feet from the top "rolled" (cause I always got in the pit) but even back then, if I would have had say a 13 foot pole, same weight, that I could have held on more towards the top, it would have "rolled" better, right? With todays equipment that's a focus to get better performance out of the pole. It's also the reason that back when I was jumpin' my crossbar placement was at most 9 inches to a foot into the pit and I've read here that some of the vaulters place their crossbar 24 to 30 inches into the pit. Am I gettin' it? Later.........Mike

Souleman, you're doing great! That is exactly what we're talking about. Holding down as far as you were on your 15' pole was putting your grip onto the sailpiece (thicker part of the pole), so it was limiting how much bend you were getting, and that's why you had to have your standards up close. Simply raising your grip would not have fixed the problem, but instead would have had you landing even more shallow. What you need/needed was a shorter pole at approximately the same stiffness which would have allowed you to grip more above the sailpeice, allow the pole to bend a little easier, and roll over better. And yes, most elites have their standards at 80cm (31.5") - deeper is better as it allows you to not have to rush your swing and you land deeper in the pit.

my high school recently purchased an essx, it was to be a 13'7", 149.7# wiht a flex of around 20, we recieved the pole and when we took it out of the pvc tube it came in to tape the bottom to prevent damage form the box, we realized that it was not truly a 13'7", but a 13'1", so we first checked to see if the etching at the top of the pole was correct, and it was etched as being a 13'7" pole, i never got the chance to jump on it because we sent it back right away and it was too close to the end of the season to bother with getting a different pole, but the girl who jumped 12' last year for us went to a camp held by earl bell down in arkansas and said that they are the nicest poles she has used

Man I need to find some money right away we had vault practice today and my soph girl is on a 12'4 115 Altius Brand new. SHe doesn't like the feel of the altius it is too slow and she bends it pretty good I need to get some money to get her a new pole.

I was told that....

Unread postby Bruce Caldwell » Thu Mar 10, 2005 11:38 pm

wyovaulter I was told that....Bell athletics paid the freight both ways on the return ($100.00)and the replacement! ANd they replaced it with a 14' as you had progressed at no additional charge!

wyovaulter I would say they bent over backwords to make this problem right for you!

UNtil the pole is returned to us we will not be able to answer why it was 13' rather than a 13'7" The serial number is for a pattern with the amount of glass length to make a 13'7" pole.

Once it is returned we have a way to scan the pole to verify the serial number as the number is in at least 4 places on each pole.

By the way our poles are not etched at the top of the pole, only at the butt? There is a marking inside the pole at th top that tells the length and the serial number, the label tells the serial number and the weight, the butt the only area that tells the length engraved and the only other place is the label on the PVC tube?

We wish you success on the new 14' ESSX pole and thank you for calling this to our attention.
