Start here... and good luck. How many kids will you have jumping? If you have enough kids to really warrant running 5-alive, you might want to get another coach or someone more qualified than an unexperienced parent.

The concept of 5-alive is not hard to explain... once a jumper misses, that vaulter will make his/her next attempt at that height after four more vaulters have made their attempts. Therefore, he/she is vaulting in what is the fifth position.

When calling the rotation, I like many others call this way...
Who's UP
who's ON DECK
who's ON HOLD
who's ON STANDBY
and who's TO FOLLOW
That way, five vaulters always know where they stand in the rotation.

The major problem is how to keep track of the indicators so you bring that jumper back at the proper time. To spring this technique on an inexperienced flight coordinator might be a very bad idea.

However, if you have time, go to this link and see if you can follow the clinic. It is one way to keep track of the indicators. I can say it works 100% of the time.
Your inexpereinced flight coordinator just might get the hang of it quickly and run your event properly most of the time which is better than none of the time.

Only USATF and NCAA provide a guideline as for when to terminate the 5-alive proceedure. My advice for running under NFHS rules would be to terminate the use of 5-alive and call the order as they appear on the sheet once you get to 10 left.

Thanks everyone. I wish I could get other coaches.

Hey, Vaultref, great link. I will forward it to my parents. We will have a mock meet on Friday so we can get it straight.

I could have as many as 30-40 or as little as 10????? I just want a smooth running meet.[/i]

While the article provides a method to run a vertical jumps event, it never discusses how to actually run 5-alive nor explains what 5-alive really is.
In fact, his method is not 5-alive at all. It's called 5-active. This is an example of why jumper get messed up if they every leave their local area and have to jump under a true 5-alive.

His choice of terminolgy for the calling the fourth and fifth jumpers is old school and hasn't been used in years. It's what we call politically IN-correct terminology. The current practice is to use the words " Standby" and "To Follow".

He is correct about the last jumper in the list possibly having to jump twice in a row. One of these days, NF will add a consecutive jump timing rule instead of having officals to do it anyway but inconsistently across the country. Good officials usually can spot this coming and adjust as needed.
