Spencer McCorkel Jumped 17 feet 04/28/05
My little brother Spencer jumped 17 feet today to set a new AR state record. He is the first soph to clear 17 feet.

Is he the 2nd nationwide as a soph? Jacob Davis is first with 17'6". Did Skipper jump 17' as a soph? I can't remember.

Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. - Muhammad Ali

This was a historic day for pole vaulting in Arkansas. We had the top 3 vaulters in the state going head to head and for the first time in Arkansas Track & Field High School History, 3 vaulters cleared 15 feet or higher in the same meet. Jeremy Willis from Lake Hamilton went 15'0" and Blake Zuber from Bryant went 15'04" for a PR.
Spencer opened up at 14'6". Made that, 15'0", 15'04", 15'08", 16'0", 16'4.25, 16'8.25, and then 17'0" on his first ever attempt at that height in his life. We measured to confirm his jump and it was legitimate.
On a personal note, this was the most fulfilling track meet for me as a competitor and a coach. He made 16'08.25" on his 2nd attempt to eclipse the 17 yr. old state best (16'08"), which I held myself. He was so emotional after making the bar that he jumped into my arms and cried with joy. I was amazed when he composed himself to make 17 feet on his 1st attempt. Spencer is truly an incredible young man and he trains harder than any high school vaulter I've met. How many kids can say they jump their age, much less a foot over their age? He's just a sophomore, so even though there will be many more great meets, I'll never forget this one!
