very superstitious writings on the wall

Unread postby BadMotherVaulter » Fri May 06, 2005 2:57 pm

i always visualize my jump all the way through before i run through

I also have strange things that i use to mark my steps, i've used this old antique lock, my nametag from work, and a miniature cannon paperweight.

I also cant have anyone anywhere near the runway, it messes with my head
suck it up.

I wouldn't call this a ritual, but I have some things that help me relax/get me concentrated like: cutting my nails, shaving, shirt and ties, putting in new spikes, cleaning shoes, pretty much anything miniscule and presise.

I agree that rituals can be damaging...I think routines are a good idea, though...they can help you stay focused at big meets, etc. But there is a lot to be said for being able to perform well without all the "trappings"....ie being able to shrug it off if you don't get your whole warm-up in, forget the special socks, or something like that.

I personally get annoyed by people who have elaborate end-of-the-runway rituals...just pick up the pole and jump!!!

I have to wear a headband when I vault... I have been for three years now... If you want to find out some fun rituals and what not, talk to Jessica Doyle... Talk about superstitious... :P

Hi, i am new to this website, but I always wear the same tanktop under my jersey before each meet, I also straighten my hair. i know that is kind of wierd, but those are the only things i am superstisious about. I listen to my music. But the secret is not to worry about what your competition is doing, only worry about your self, i learaned that the hard way...so my point is that really, if you just worry about yourself, everything falls into place.

I have a routine that I try to stick through. One thing that might be considered my only voo-doo item at meets in my 'stubbie' - a broken end of a pole. I don't even generally do anything with it...though it is helpful for last minute drills and such...but I like to have it with me.

When its my turn up to vault i walk down the runway dragging my
pole, when i get to my mark i turn around and stand on my tippy toes. I take a really deep breath and hold it for 5-8 long seconds and then run like hell.

SI just wrote an article saying athletes who wear red are more likely to win.
