well i used to be abit weird with cross country..like if i ran a good race id eat the same thing the next race day..thinking about carbs and energy here....but for polevault i wear my spandex shorts...kinda like others high knee socks... but thats for the picture taking..ya know baggy shorts..dont want the undies to be seen :o :D . so when im up to vault ill check my grip and then flex my pole, and check my grip then flex my pole again..take a step back with my right foot with the toes on my left foot facing the up...and then i go.

be4 i vault i talk to myself..sumtimed my teamates say they can hear me..but i say oush..like 5 times in a row..to make sure i push down on the pole..then i say run like 2 or 3 times..then i say go 4 times..and then i run. and now im very superstitious cuz i didnt say "my words" and i planted too late and broke my ankle. so now i will always say my words. im like that in gymnastics..i have to talk to myslef..but the problem is..ppl can hear me..and the make fun of me by saying my words wit me. grrr..lol

when i vault, i CANNOT have people talking (at least within earshot) cuz i end up losing my focus and can hear everything said. during one meet while i was on the runway, i started running down and some kid said something hilarious, i laughed and it threw my whole approach off. also, b4 every vault, i use three forward to back strokes with the chalk block and then clap twice n slap my thighs... kinda weird... and i end up having nice white handprints on the shorts lol.

i've always wanted to vault with everyone doin the clap. ;)

Does anyone else not hear anything once they start their run?

I guess that I just block out everything else...I can do it for pain, so it makes sense that I would do it for sounds and whatever else.

But, then again, maybe it's just me & I'm strange :o

At one home meet they had music playing, and during both my vault and the 400 meter hurdles and did not even notice music in the background. I was kinda disapointed about that because during my 400 hurdle race they played "lowrider"

Here is one of the most important rituals you can do on every vault....

Check you standards! I can't tell you how many times the HS vaulters I coach go to the runway and start their approach without checking the standards...
