Sandler soars to victory in pole vault

Accomplishment: Lodi pole vaulter Joshua Sandler cleared 12 feet, 6 inches, to win the boys intermediate division this past weekend at the USA Track and Field Association Championships at Granada High School in Livermore

Sandler, a member of the Lodi/Stockton Track Club and an incoming junior at St. Mary's High School, qualified for the Pacific Regional, which will be held July 9-10 in Livermore. The top three qualify for Junior Olympic Championships.

Family: Michael and Nicki Sandler, parents; three brothers.

Favorite Sport: Pole vault. Sandler, who has been vaulting for two years, enjoys the camaraderie with other vaulters. "And I like to fly," he added.

Favorite Athlete: Pole vaulter Toby Stevenson, who was a silver medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics. "He's so animated after he clears the bar," Sandler said.

Favorite Subject: Science. Sandler enjoys the hands-on experiments in the labs.

Favorite Hobby: Swimming and pole vaulting.

Would like to meet: Ukranian pole vaulter Sergei Bubka, who won the gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Crowning achievement: Earning a 4.0 grade point average the last four semesters and clearing 13 feet to tie the St. Mary's junior varsity pole vault record.

Future Plans: Sandler plans to attend medical school and become a doctor. He would like to vault in college and attempt to qualify for the Olympics.

The Athlete of the Week is selected by the News-Sentinel sports staff. Nominations are gladly accepted. Sandler will receive a T-shirt courtesy of Lodi Sporting Goods for being selected.
