i'm not naiive, and i'm not slandering anyone here either, but let's not just shun the idea...

it should be discussed. not necessarily about who we think takes performance enhancing drugs, but about the options out there and the consequences and so forth.

I TAKE PERFORMANCE ENHANCING SUPPLEMENTS!!! anything that enhances my performance, like water, granola, tuna, gatorade, breakfast/lunch/dinner... you get the idea... no one said the performance enhancers were illegal!!!

there are many many options, natural or synthetic, that are USADA, NCAA, and whatever conference you jumped for in college APPROVED... i think there should we should talk openly about what's illegal and what's not.

maybe start a list of things we know are safe to take to better improve the sport?? i mean, we sit here and offer advice on technique, training regimens, and everything else we consider ourselves to be experts on... so why not offer advice on performance enhancing drugs.... maybe even make a list of products and companies that are safe and ones to avoid when looking for what to eat/ buy!! wow!!

Allbeit that you shouldn't trust anyone on the site for ANY reason. never just go out and take something someone says is legal because you trust them, you should have the proper doping officials test the product first.

but it is my belief that there is not one single elite athlete that just wakes up everyday and eats 3 normal square meals and trains hard and is at the top of the podium every 4 years... i mean, come on... sorry to burst your bubble for the high school kids out there, cause i was in the same boat you were just 3 years ago, but now.... :deadrose: it's not a perfect world... we see this every other month or so with another positive drug test in the world of athletics.

but to the best of my knowledge, i do not ever remember a pole vaulter ever testing positive for USADA or IAAF testing. :D :yes: :yes:

you bring up a good point about knowledge.....in college most of us are made aware of our options and the conquences of them through coaches, teammates, trainers, and team doctors......a lot of highschool athletes do not have that option......I think if this post is handled corretly and used for the purpose of INFORMING on the subject of performance enhancing supplements, it could be helpful to many people.....

For instance, I remember when I was a sophomore in HS and I started taking a mix that contained a couple grams of Creatine....though i now don't use it, back at that time i wish i would have known more.

Becca, it might be helpful to know what is and isn't ok. I can remember when I walked on to the University of Arkansas football team back in the spring of 1970 that I weighed 140. After 9 weeks of 3 and a half hour a day training and eating at the jocks dorm 4 out of 5 days a week (I'd make sure I wouldn't leave practice till after 6:00 when the regular dorm cafeteria had closed) that I weighed in at 175 when spring ball started. I had no idea in the world what I was eating other than meat and potatoes, and a muscle weight (that was the brand) shake and "salt" pills before and after practice. So yes I think it would be smart to be able to say, "if it has _________ in the ingredients, DON"T EAT IT". As with a lot of other things, I might be niave here (old people are like that ya know) but that's just my opinion. Later...............Mike

well part of the problem is products of the same general name, often contain different chemicals within them. so telling someone to take a calcium supplement for example can be tricky. some contain iron, which in higher doses is toxic for males. also, gnc claims that they dont sell anything thats against NCAA rules, but if you walk around theres all kinds of stuff to get in trouble with, so you have to do your research first, and ask people who know the truth, such as USADA charts, or your schools nutritionist, if your fortunate enough to have them.

but honestly, the best thing you can do is try to get most of your nutritional intake from real food. vitaments are not a replacement to healthy eating, they are a supplement to cover things you may come up a bit short on.

other than that, look at your specific needs. if you have bone problems, a calcium supplement would be a wise investment (assuming thats the underlying issue). some people have sore joints from years of training, things like osteo biflex, or gnc triflex, contains things that are legal that are supposed to rebuild some cartiledge and ease joint pain. Vitamin B is supposed to aid if your under a lot of stress , such as from school or whatnot. Lots of athletes are taking creatine now, although from what ive read it makes you very succeptible to muscle tears if you dont drink enough water, which makes it risky, especially for vaulters and sprinters... and yes trey decs too :P . Also creatine is found in so many forms now, straight monohydrate, or blended in supplements like nitrotech, so its hard to know what else in those that might get you in trouble. Emmmmm,, well. those are my basic thoughts on supplements. but in the end, do your homework, have things tested, stay out of trouble. I had an NCAA drug test indoors, and i personally only take a daily multivitamin, but i was still scared as crap just because you start wondering about everything youve eatin in the last few days. so be smart...

you should be able to find a list of banned substances on the NCAA site (www.ncaa.org) and be able to download the rules. This would be highly recommended to anyone, especially those about to enter into college, preparing to compete.

I think there should be a list of legal supplements. How else can a 5'7 120ish guy gain weight and muscle?

Just to let you know, a while back i tried eating fatty foods , and i didnt gain weight. it sucks. Im going to be stuck on the smallest pole forever. So a list of the good stuff that isnt illegal would be nice. or something like that :yes:
