I love all the topics on this site, they have created some great conversations. So here is a question how does one qualify for the olympic trials.

u came to the right place.

http://www.usatf.org/events/2003/USAOutdoorTFChampionships/entry/qualifyingStandards.shtml

Mens
PV Auto-5.70 / 18-8.25 B-5.54 / 18-2 Field Size-18

Womens
PV Auto-4.17 / 13-8.25 B-4.10 / 13-5.25 Field Size-18

"A" - athletes who attain the "A" standard will automatically be included in the event. *
"B" - athletes who attain the "B" standard will be accepted into the event only if additional competitors are needed to fill the stated field size (i.e. not enough athletes have attained the "A" standard).

More Important Facts for the vault

Qualifying marks must be made and verifiable in one of the following:
USATF- or IAAF-sanctioned events,
collegiate meets, or
high school meets, except duals and triangulars.

All qualifying marks from outdoor competitions must be attained on or after Friday, July 5, 2002 through Sunday, June 15, 2003. Qualifying marks from indoor competitions must be attained on or after Saturday, November 30, 2002.

An entered athlete attaining a qualifying mark within one-tenth percent (0.1%) of the "B" standard for a running event, or 3 cm below the standard for the discus, javelin, or hammer, or 1 cm below the standard for all other field events may declare their desire to compete during the normal declaration period. Athletes within this allowance may be accepted into the competition by the Sport Chair when positions are available in existing heats or sections in running events or when the number of competitors in a field event is fewer than 16.

Those are the qualifing standards for the US championships for 2003, not the Olympic Trials. The trials have larger fields and prelims. The mens standard is 5.70 for automatic and the however many more it takes (above 5.50) to make a field of 24. Fof the Women its 4.47 and 4.27. Just a clarification

Thats me, although Chicago shouldnt be a representation of my normal vaulting. I was still in the experimental stage of the year. But I did have a lot of fun!
