TONGA'S annual Inter–Collegiate Athletic Sports competition opened today at the Teufaiva Stadium, Nuku'alofa, when for the first time schools from all island groups in the kingdom were represented.
This year's 59th Inter-collegiate Athletic Sports competition is the first time that student athletes from the northern Niuas have participated, with a five member team.
The competition began this morning with the marching of the teams, 17 from each high school and middle school in Tongatapu, and one each, representing all the high schools and middle schools in Vava’u, Ha’apai, ‘Eua, and the two Niuas.
The three-day track and field will have a total of 10 track events and seven field events.
The track events include 3,000m, 1,500m, 800m, 400m, 200m, 100m, 4x400m relay, 4x100m relay, single hurdles and the long hurdles. The field events include shot put, javelin, long jump, high jump, triple jump, discuss throwing and the pole vault.
Today's events was kicked off with the 1,500m running for Intermediate Girls, Open and Senior Grades. Followed by the boys 1,500m in the Intermediate, Open and Senior Grades.
Medals will be awarded to the winners of each event on a daily basis and the sports competition will be concluded on Friday April 21.

They pole vault in Tonga
I have their women's national record as 2.50m (8' 2 1/4") by Melesia Mafile'o at Auckland on 22 February 2003. Winfred Kramer has their men's national record as 4.90m (16' 3/4") by Aisea Tukutau at Wollongong on 7 August 1996.
