Hanson vaults past state pole vault mark

CHAMPAIGN - To attract attention in the three-ring circus that is indoor track and field, one must do something extraordinary.
Phil Hanson had everyone's attention in the Class AA portion of the 17th annual Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic Track and Field Meet Saturday at the Armory.
All the Pontiac High School senior did was pole vault higher than any prep in state history indoors or out by clearing 17 feet, 1¼ inches.
The Northern Iowa recruit narrowly missed on his attempt at a nation-leading 17-5.
Hanson was named the meet's outstanding male performer while Evanston's Shalina Clark was named the outstanding female performer after setting a meet record of 7.96 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles.
Hanson wasn't alone in the victory circle among Pantagraph area entrants as Lincoln's Tony Dallavalle prevailed on his final attempt in the long jump with an indoor career best of 22-10¼.
The highlight for area girls was the second-place finish by Mahomet-Seymour's Laura Morris in the high jump with a personal record tying 5-7.
Boys
Hanson began his day with first-attempt clearances at 15-0 and 15-6 before needing three tries to get over a meet record 16-2. The old mark was 16-¾.
He clinched victory over defending champion and meet record holder Jake Winder of Plainfield South with a second-attempt clearance at a career best 16-8.
Winder, who fell to 3-1 all-time against Hanson, finished second at 16-2. Even if Winder had made 16-8, he trailed Hanson on misses at that point.
"I've always wanted to beat him," Hanson said.
With the crowd clapping rhythmically, Hanson charged down the runway and folded himself over 17-1¼ on his first attempt, causing pandemonium in the stands. The previous best in state history was an outdoor 17-½ by Edwardsville's Daren McDonough in 1992.
"I just jumped high off the ground and swung through," Hanson said. "My jump at 17-5 was better."
Hanson missed 16-8 last week at the Cogdal Relays.
"I was just getting through my poles better," said Hanson, who surpassed his coach, Corey Christenson, a 16-7 vaulter in college. "After I made 16-8, he said, 'you got me.'
"He's great. I wouldn't be half as good without him. Pole vault is all technique and if you don't have a good coach, you're never really going to go very far. Hopefully I can get 18 by the end of the year."

METAMORA - A year ago, Pontiac High School's Phil Hanson pole vaulted a Pantagraph area record 15 feet, 10 inches in the Metamora Invitational, but never went higher the rest of the year. Saturday, he upped the area and meet record to 16-0 and made a guarantee.
"I'll definitely go higher than sixteen this year," said the Northern Iowa recruit, who made an all-time state best of 17-1¼ indoors last week. "I see 16-9 being closer to my average."
In other pole vaulting news, Normal Community star Taylor Troemel, who wasn't expected to vault until the sectional because of injury, won with a clearance of 10-0 under 40-degree conditions.
Sophomore teammate Erika Hanson was well clear of the field in the 400-meter dash thanks to her meet record of 58.1 seconds, the No. 2 time in school history. Only nine girls in area history have gone faster.
Troemel and Hanson helped NCHS dominate the girls standings with 193 points, 59 ahead of runner-up Metamora.
"It was unexpected," said Coach Amy Scott. "The kids just responded to the opportunity to workout and didn't let the weather get them down."
Metamora defended its boys title with 102 points while NCHS was second with 80.5.
Boys
Hanson made first-attempt clearances at 15-0 and 16-0 before missing three times at 16-9. His last attempt was the closest. He also placed second in the 100 in 11.0 and anchored the winning 1,600 relay (3:31.5).
Pontiac's Rayme Mackinson continued his winning ways in the long jump, popping 21-3¾ on his first attempt.
"He's a foot over what he was doing at this time last year," said Coach Dave Young.
Girls
Just two months after right shoulder surgery, Troemel returned to the pole vault while taking precautions to avoid re-injury. Using a smaller pole and a shorter approach, the NCHS senior won without pain after just one day of practice.
"I should have had 11-0," said Troemel, last year's state meet third-placer at 12-0. "My college coach (Illinois Wesleyan's Mike Cockerham) told me for the first two weeks he just wants me to take short runs and littler vaults and by state we'll get back on the big pole.
"It's fun to get that 10 points for the team again."
