Of course, these judgment calls are left up to the responsibility of the PV official. Not everyone can see that it could of been a take off step that was in.
As far as the slip of the hand because of sweat is going to happen, of course. Keenon King at the 2004 Summit NH'd and it was indoors, you can see that at
www.neovault.com. Of course the event wasn't canceled, but his hand did slip.
But, stopping the event because of rain is a good reason. Like I said before, there will be those athletes that are not prepared for those situations. This is a thing the official has to deal with. if the kid slips, the pole is probably wet because of the rain. Remember, I'm only talking about Rain now. Everyone can decipher between a monsoon, typhoon, hurricane, tropical storm, hard rain, light rain, whatever.
Again, this is the judgment of the official to postpone it if a kid slips. I'm sure it doesn't happen as much in College meets, gosh I hope those athletes are prepared for those kinds of conditions.
If we're talking about different kinds of conditions, think about this one. The temperature is so cold and has very light rain that would make the athlete's hands so cold that they can't grip the pole, then yes their hand would probably slip.
Like I said, there are many different conditions that would postpone the event.
I'm sure that the meet in question for this topic was on the boarder of postponing the event.
The reason I'm putting my two cents into this topic is because I've witnessed too many officials proceed with the event when they should of postponed it.
Officials should explain to all the vaulters that if the conditions are to that point where they need to keep the poles covered, they should tell them at the beginning or just as the rain starts. During the event the official should keep a constant eye out where all the poles are and make sure those athletes are keeping them dry. I always have a lot of roles of tape with me if the pole needs to be retaped. I have no problem with letting another athlete from another school use some tape.
