everyone knows bubka has the record, but who are the guys that have the closest jumps to him? are there any over hartwigs american record? can someone please give me a list or somethin? gracias

off the top of my head Tarasov and Markov are tied for the "non-Bubka" world record at 6.05/19'10.25". Okkert Brits and Hartwig have also jumped 6.03. Igor Trandenkov is just below that (is he retired?). Tim Lobinger, Jean Galfione and Danny Ecker have jumped 6.00. Some of these guys have been injured but hopefully they all come back healthy this year.

That man is Rodion Gatuallin. He has a PR of 6.02.

Geez how did I forget Gataullin?! Only one of the best jumpers ever. Can't believe a couple of the stories I've heard about him either.

I can't really see anyone breaking bubka's record. he did everything so perfectly and was an amazing athlete. for someone to break bubka's record, i think that he has to be every bit as strong and fast. Also, the person must have incredibly accurate timing. The only real innovation since bubka's 1994 WR vault has been the carbon pole. all this would do is lighten the pole and thus allow the vaulter to increase speed.

here are a few of bubka's stats i've heard:
300 lb bench
can skip around w/ 315 lb on his back (heard from my coach)
LJ 26'
HJ 7'
at one time was 4th fastest russian.

try beating that stuff...

Bubka never:
Jumped 26' in the long jump,
Jumped 7' in the high jump,
or run under 10.5 in the 100m.

He was never on the USSR 4x100m or ever in the top 10 Russian sprinters.

He is not the fastest guy ever on the runway nor could he leap over buildings with a single bound.

What he acomplished he acomplished with a pretty normal body for a world class pole vaulter. Not the biggest or fastest or stongest. Just the best!

I would have to disagree that he was not the fastest on the runway. He was at least one of the top 5 fastest with a pole. If you watch video of other elite vaulters and then watch some of Bubka's first 20' jumps there is a noticeable difference in his speed on the runway and of the overall vault. Thats just how it looks to me. How else could he clear 20' by about 10-12"?

its called technique..........

Bubka is not even the "best" technician to ever vault. Technique is best measured by the ht cleared as compared to grip height. Bubka gripped somewhere around 17'3" (we will not subrtact the box for this comparison) and jumped (we will round up for this) 20'3". 3 feet above his top hand. Now lets take Joe Dial, who griped somewhere around 16'4" and jumped 19'5". 3'1" above his grip. So who was the better vaulter...................sure Bubka jumped higher but who had the better technique. Of course Bubka also blew every chance he had to make his record untouchable by making tons of $$$ for only breaking the record a cm at a time but who could blame him. He made several million for lots of records instead of only (i said ONLY) 1 million for doing it once and setting it so high even HE would have trouble jumping higher. Kinda fun to think that Bubka is the greatest vaulter EVER and he is not all at the same time.

Regardless of all this hear say, Bubka is still the only person ever over 20 feet. And for ajint smith, records are made to be, and always are, BROKEN. Eventually his record will fall, because no matter how good you are, someone will EVENTUALLY always be better....yes, bubka is of course one of my favorite vaulters hands down, but he was not perfect, nor is anyone... but anyway, i'm just saying, the figures only mean so much, especially with how i look at it at how mental pole vaulting is. I'm not so much worried about someone not jumping 20' cause they physically can't do it, but mentally, 20' is in a place that everyone dreams of, it's gotta be tough.
