THIEVES in Brisbane have stolen Olympic, Commonwealth and world championship medals belonging to pole vault star Tatiana Grigorieva.

Police said today the "irreplaceable sentimental items" were stored in a safe which was stolen from a business premises in Tingalpa in Brisbane's east.
The premises were broken into on July 18.

The Sydney Olympic silver medallist and model also lost an Australian flag bearing autographs of the entire Australian Sydney 2000 Olympic games team.

Police said Grigorieva, competing in Stockholm, was "deeply distressed" by the loss.

The 2002 Commonwealth champion and 1999 world championship bronze medallist has appealed to anyone knowing the whereabouts of the medals or having knowledge of the theft to contact police.

Police said the medals are easily recognisable, including both the details of the event and host country.

Gold Coast-based Grigorieva, 30, has told police she is willing to accept the return of the items through a third party.

"Her management is prepared to act as intermediaries in any proposed return of the items," a police spokesman said.

Ranked 14th in the world, Ms Grigorieva has been in top form in Europe.

At a Golden League meet in Paris last weekend, she recorded a season best 4.51m to finish fifth behind Russian world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva.

Golden girl's medals snatched

SPORT glamour girl Tatiana Grigorieva is devastated by the theft of her most prized possessions, including the silver medal she won at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

The pole vault ace said she was staggered every medal she had won in top level competition had been stolen in a safe burglary.
The thieves also snatched an Australian flag bearing the autographs of all her Sydney 2000 teammates.

The safe also contained medals from Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Goodwill Games meetings.

Grigorieva, who is competing in Europe, said the stolen treasures were "irreplaceable sentimental items".

"All of this material is priceless to me and worthless to anyone else, so I just hope that anyone who has them will get them back to me as soon as possible," she said.

"If there is anyone out there who knows anything about the theft or where the items stolen are, please contact the police or my management company."

Grigorieva had stored them in a safe at a business in the Brisbane suburb of Tingalpa but burglars struck on July 18. The premises were owned by friends of the athlete and protected by security cameras.

When they could not open the safe, the thieves carried it away.

Grigorieva's manager Rick Carter said the safe contained every honour Grigorieva had won since she started pole vaulting in 1997.

"She would describe it as her life in a box," Mr Carter said. "She's very upset. It's pretty much every medal that's important to her."

Mr Carter said Grigorieva had previously kept the medals at a bank but shifted them to the safe where they were more accessible if required for school visits and other public appearances.

He said the 30-year-old former Russian was in her best form since the 2000 and 2001 seasons.

Mr Carter said the medals were not believed to have been the burglars' target. Computer equipment and petty cash were also taken.

"Someone's broken in there looking for whatever they were looking for and has decided to take the safe," he said.

"And if they've got the safe open they would have found something in there they weren't quite looking for. It's totally unrelated. Less than a handful of people knew the medals were there."

Queensland police are investigating the theft.

"Her management is prepared to act as intermediaries in any proposed return of the items," a police spokesman said.

Ranked 14th in the world, Grigorieva is to compete in Stockholm today.
