Brad Walker not given the...

Unread postby jumpbackin » Wed Jul 26, 2006 7:41 pm

Love he deserves from his home town of Spokane. If you asked a little old lady down at the mall who Casey Caverly or Matt Santangelo are she would probably get all mysty eyed before telling you all about those fine young men. By the way, they were college Basket Ball players and now play overseas.

If you asked the same lady who Brad Walker is she would be more likely to tell you he's the child molester that moved into the neighborhood than she would say he has anything to do with sports. This is a local guy who was national champ last year and is the leading vaulter in the world this year.

Considering Brad's consistency and improvement over the last couple years, if he stays healthy he will likely be the favorite going into the next Olympic games. When he recently cleared 6m the local news coverage went something like this; "Brad Walker of University High School Pole Vaulted 6 meters this weekend". That's it! Why arn't these stations clamoring to get interviews and to get footage? I'm sure the people of Spokane would love to know about him and his success if they were given the chance by our local news stations and news paper.

Because this is the United States. A one-hit baseball game get far more coverage than anything track and field.

It hit an all time low these past few weeks when dominos and darts are getting ESPN coverage and not track or lacrosse or MLS, the lesser known sports.

It makes me sick.

I also have video of the sportscenter the day Bubka went 6.14. The coverage lasted MAYBE 8 seconds and gave the basics and a quick 3 second video from behind the mat.

Sad.

A letter to the editor might help in Spokane but I doubt it. The paper is just as bad.

It wouldn't hurt to have multiple people pushing the Spokesman-Review for more coverage of Brad. I know Bill Roe sent an email to the Seattle Times today forwarding the USATF press release on Brad being named USATF athlete of the week.

Great point. And what about Poker or the Black Widow in Pool. Give me a break.

I don't think people in Spokane should have to lobby for Brad Walker coverage. The news guys should be all over it on their own.

I work for a company in Spokane that makes cheese powder. It's a good company and it's a nice niche market but hardly news worthy. I probably got more air time talking about our business last year than Brad did for winning championships. Believe me, we are not soliciting coverage. The news crews come to us wanting to do a story.

I have to ask...what the heck is "cheese powder"?
"You have some interesting coaching theories that seem to have little potential."

Take cheese, melt it down, pump it through a spray-dryer and you have cheese powder. Commonly used in sauce mixes and snack seasonings like Dorritos or Cheetos.

That's right. They're looking to do a story about the business more so than about cheese powder, but still quite a dull story compared to what they could be getting.

In the northwest we have a nightly news channel that does a 30 minute show each night, just on sports (nw sports tonight) and they didn't say a thing about his jump. Another group that should be interested in a world sports leader.
