Pegs at GWI?

It's not a high school rule. It only becomes an issue for most high schoolers if they do Junior Olympics (and it is not like most of the JO Meets will bother to use the new pegs) or if they are trying to compete at an international level.

Or to put it a little better......................everyone else in the WHOLE WORLD uses this rule. Only the NFHS left it alone. I do not agree with the rule BUT it is the rule and must be followed. SO if you know you have a shot at the next level then KNOW the rules or you will get the shaft.

Except like half of the colleges in the country have not changed their pegs yet... and I would be surprised if the rest of the world has been any swifter at making changes. Obviously the elite meets are going to... but I would be amazed if every high school in other countries had switched over.

Thats the point.................not many agree with it, but the day a mark is denied because they just did not want to follow the rule (no matter how stupid it is) is the day someone (the athlete) is punished because a facility did not want to be in compliance. If you get a speeding ticket your breaking the rules, but the only person responsible for your speeding is you. If you set a mark in non legal conditions then are you at fault?? Partially you are, part of our responsibility as athletes is to know the rules and follow them. The primary responsiblity is on the coaches to make sure their facility is up to speed. In any other sport the participants know the rules and can even argue them with the officials so why then do so few vaulters know the rules of how to do their event? If you love this sport, like many of us on this board, then why do we not know the rules and make sure they are followed. A few yrs ago a vaulter at his home facility was awarded an equp failure because his hand slipped off the pole on his 3rd attempt at his opening height (this is NOT an equp failure its a NH). A protest was filed and the head official agreed with the original decision. Now, as an athlete how can you feel good about taking advantge of a BAD call to be crowned champion. Maybe its just me............but I would have taken the NH and went home.

I don't think GWI did anything wrong by using the HS sized pegs. I gathered the purpose of the meet as being to give the best kids in the country a chance to compete head to head and chase after the HS National records.

Your correct, they did not do anything wrong, they run the meet by the NFHS rules. The problem comes in when you have such talented athletes that they can qualify for other meets that use a different set of rules. The qualifying marks must be set useing the rules of the govorning body of the meet. So to qualify for the USATF championships their rules apply. Now to make this simple the IAAF is the ultimate govorning body. If you look up the rules of all except the NFHS they all read the same way (almost word for word). When the IAAF changes a rule the USATF will follow. When the USATF changes a rule the NCAA will follow (because each gov body does not want to exclude thier athletes from competeing in the other organizations events because of a rule). Unfortunatly the NFHS did not do so and normally does not.

My advice to the NFHS... if you are going to make an equipment change... phase it in! Give schools at least a year to work on getting new equipment. Yeah the new peg rule is not as hard... they can always saw down their pegs... but still. ADs do not like seeing that they have to buy new equipment.

Ya esp the new pit regulations. Our coach got notice real late and then he had to fight to get the AD to get them. The whole season we never got em so we had to borrow an extra mat from our cross town rival and use some old high jump pits to make it legal. Everything was done except for our cover. They need to let these rules know a year in advance not right before the season starts.

Adopted after the end of last track season. Giving school less than a year to get new pits or upgrade their existing ones. I think giving high schools a year to come into compliance would have done a lot for saving pole vault in many leagues that are dropping it.
