NEW YORK, February 2 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's 19-time world record breaker in Pole Vault Yelena Isinbayeva said a new world record would be an optimal result for her U.S. debut at the 100th edition of the Millrose Games in New York starting Friday.
"A new world record would be an optimal result for me at the tournament," the 24-year-old Olympic Champion said in an interview with RIA Novosti. "I would like to present such a gift to my fans and spectators of the Millrose Games, especially for its 100th anniversary."
Isinbayeva, who became the first woman in the world to vault clear at 5.01 meters (16.43 feet) during the 2005 World Outdoor Championships in Helsinki said she wants to set an indoor world record by clearing 4.91 meters (16.10 feet). Isinbayeva herself set the previous record at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics.
"Last year was a difficult one for me," she said. "I changed my coach, manager and my place of residence. But the year has passed, and I am ready for new achievements."
She said that despite the year's difficulties, she won gold at the 2006 European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, and moved to Monaco.
Isinbayeva, who will be visiting the United States for the first time, was twice named Athlete of the Year by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), in 2004 and 2005. She is currently ranked ninth in the overall rating of the association
