Highest I've ever seen a HSer start at was 16'6" at the AAU Nationals in '88. Some guy from Missouri. His PR was a bit over 17'. That was the only bar he cleared that day.

17 feet is usually a good opening height for a guy that is consistently above or around 18 feet. there are about a dozen guys in college that open up at that and usually it isnt a hard height for them. Im sure that more guys would open up at that if they had to, and make it on first or second attemps.

there are two big things to note with opening hights for HS. First of all the obivious being you need to be able to jump the opening height every time you come out. So if your comefy at 17', start at 17'. Secound is problem. How many people are in your meet, and where are they starting. One year at districts I started at 11' or 12' and that was at least an hour into the meet. But hey thats ohio for ya.

I remember reading a story about the Gat man and how he was at a meet and kept passing hights and sipping from the same water bottle till they got to like 19'2 or something close, then he came in and skyed it. Turns out his water bottle was full of vodka, and he just had to wait till he got buzed enough...

That would be Markov at Worlds 2001 where he jumped 6.05. But i don't think he started super high.

Markov started at 5.75(18-10.25) that day which is still fairly high but his 5.95 jump from that meet I have is awesome.
