It took him a while to get in a groove, and he must be doing something right from last season to early outdoor and PR from 16'9 to 17'5. If he has any technique problems, as just about EVERY high school vaulter does, they have a chance to work them out in college. Kind of inconsiderate to put down a national champion and say he has no chance of getting better .achtungpv wrote:Wow. Maston's technique is worse than last year. If he could do any little thing right he'd jump 18'.
Too bad he's going to UH. He may have had a shot to be a good one.
The greater the challenge, the more glorious the triumph

Is this a coincidence, or is there a coaching connection?
No coaching connection... But you are absolutely right... They have a near identical jump... Dropped out drive knee and the ability to get inverted better than nearly anyone else... Same plant too... crazy...
4.75... Write THAT down...

Thanks Becca for posting the great video

I am impressed with both boys jumping. Items to look at of most importants is the pivot point on each of them is the top hand.
Yes a glorified hip drag or a two legged swing is most commonly found in High School boys and when they get to college they are taught not to do that. But I wonder if maybe we need to develop this.
1. It transfers more energy to the pole and the vault than driving the knee. ( Because the pendulum is longer)
2. It delays the swing- back in order to gather more energy into the vault.
3. Both boys Spencer and Matston both are pushing over 3 feet+
4. Bobby Most in high school bent the pole more at take-off than either of these guys.
5. Both jumpers are getting tremendous blow on the top of their jumps.
Those are some serious approach speeds both are bringing!
Some aspects of their jumps look more like Earl Bell, Chad Hartwig styles. IN High school neither of these guys jumped 17'
In college they both will get faster and be stronger, I see them both being really good NCAA jumpers.

I'm with you Bruce! You're only going to jump as high as your hips will allow. Both guys create a great stretch reflex off the ground and have tremendous hip speed, regardless of some flaws in their take-off position.
It was a fierce competition and we need to keep in mind that's exactly what it was, a competition. Those guys weren't trying to put on a clinic. They were just trying to jump as high as possible for this stage of their development.
And how about Maston doing something that can't be taught by anyone? He made that bar when he absolutely had to in order to win. The University of Texas is fortunate to sign a guy like that!
