Speaking of large in charge poles, there have only been about five guys to ever vault on a 5.20m 11.2 Spirit. Let me know if there are any more. We're trying to figure this out here at UNI.
Bubka
Brits
Jacob Davis
Jacob Pauli (blow through at Kansas Relays)
Darren Niedermeyer (lovin' the tail wind at Kansas Relays)
I guess the real question would be who has vaulted on the largest pole over their body weight? Isn't that what the arbitrary pound limit is good for on every pole!
bubka's poles
Davis never jumped on anything longer than 5m. His largest was 9.8. He did weigh around 215 lbs.
Chmara was on gigantic poles as referenced above. Another 5.81 Pole pole vaulter (ha ha) was Marion Kolasa. I believe he was on poles around 11.0...but he was another ~6'6" 200+ lbs vaulter.

Pacer??? Spirit only my brother. Not that I have anything against Pacer.

Thanks
I think what mattered to Bubka is not the actual index of the pole but the difference between his body weight and the pole rate. i.e. 220 LBS pole would compute to delta 35 if you wiegh 185 LBS.
Now the pole customisation got so sofisticated that this is just a general rule to estimate your possition not exact science.
I.e if you weigh 170 and use 190 pole you have difference of 20. Again 16' 190 would be different from 17' 190. I think we need to ask manufactures for clarification on that.
To my memory Bubka had 35LBS difference. We should ask Spitrit guys on the exact length. I think some of the pole were 5.30m.
This is actually a very good topic. I hear many say that they are not heavy enough, etc. It would be nice to be able to correlate the (grip/pole index/pole length) to a simple delta number based on the mass of an athlete to be uniform in estimating relative pole stiffness for different athletes, because, it does reflect on efficiency of the athlete.
We had issues in estimating the relative efficiency in case an athlete lost 12 LBS and used a softer pole. In this case, he may have had a higher index differential between the body and the pole rate, but we did not have an exact method of estimating it.

Pacer to Nordic to Spirit ...

; )
his first poles were george moore pacer III's. not exactly sure when he changed to spirit... when spirit was founded... 1987ish... steve chappell and lane started making the spirit poles with the "george moore" knowledge and parameters... and it appears they have continued but with some possible improvements in the process...
nat durham went to gill around the time pacer was purchanced?... again i'm not sure how long or if pacer continued with the "pacer" pole... or if they used the spiril wrap technology...
at some point i was told that bubka was using a 10.6/10.8flex 5m or 5.10.. that pole was his sweet pole.. i have the basic pattern for that pole... that pole got damaged.. so a new 10.6/10.8 was made to replace it.. for some reason that pole didn't work as well and wasn't "sweet'... i wanted to compare the patterns but never got the opportunity to do so........... i have a felling, allthough care was taken to keep the process and pattern the same, that some factor un-noticed was different..
mike tully had two poles of the same flex... but different patterns........... one would help him go more vertical quicker but let him penetrate the same... we actually used the two poles with the same flex and he cleared 19-2 at irvine with the same flex after "blowing through" the first one... go figure..
i have continually used the basic pole pattern i found in most vaulters "sweet" pole in the 80's to help my vaulters vault correctly.. by the "model"
i don't know if anyone noticed but when gatallin changed the poles he jumped on... he didn't improve... i do know what "kind" of design of pole he though he wanted, but he was wrong... that was proven that night in LA when he got "stood up" by the pole that was made for him.. actually he though it had been made wrong.. but it was not.. it was exactly by his specs... but those specs wouldn't, will not work...
i have a feeling that bubka occasionally tried a pole that seemingly was perfect but didn't work..

This is off the subject (kind of) but fun anyway. When Bubka jumped 6m at the L.A. Invitational in 1992, I was an infield assistant/official and was assigned to help him out with standards, steps etc. At the end of the meet he gave me the plug from the pole he jumped 6m on (it’s a 2). He gave it to me because I told him the story about how my brother got Issakson’s butt plug at the Texas Relays from the first 5.50m (18’ 1â€Â
