Question: 4.90 to 5.00 transition?

Unread postby mowad1 » Wed May 09, 2007 11:15 am

I have an athlete who is blowing through a 4.90- 17.0. Our next pole option is a 5.00- 16.6. If he were to match his grip would there be a major difference in stiffness? He is gripping down one fist on the 4.90. Feedback from people who have actually made this transition and used these poles would be appreciated.

A lot of company's flex their 4.90 and 5.00 poles on the same scale. So should be fine.

Thanks for the input. I was able to acquire a 4.90-16.6 today. This will definitely close the gap and should make the transition to the 5.00-16.6 much smoother.

if hes holding that high on a 4.90, he'll be ready for the 5m transition....

just make it a small 5m for an easier transition...

Yeah, I was able to get a 17.- 5.00 from a friend so I will probably have him use that first. I just have to drive 3 hours each way to get it:( Didn't have the weather to get on the 5.00-16.6 yesterday. Thanks for the confidence booster. My athlete has only jumped 4.95 but is 6'7" tall and about 170lb. His grip height and pole stiffness has gone up a lot this year and I don't want any set backs because of my stupidity, i.e. putting him on a pole that he has no business.

My transition from 4.90m to 5m poles went like this:

I had 4.90m Spirits at 18.0, 17.6, 17.4, 17.2, 17.0, 16.6.

Our 5m line went 17.8, 17.2, 16.8, 16.5, 16.0, 15.8, 15.4, 14.8

I went through the entire line of 4.90s and transitioned from the 16.6 to the 5m 17.6 with no problems. the biggest 5m I was able to get on was the 16.8. I did take one jump on the 16.5 and got rejected pretty hard. Personally, I'd think going from a 17.0 4.90 to a 16.6 5m would have been too big of a jump for me.
