Ellis breaks Canadian pole-vault record

Dana Ellis is back on track. The Kitchener native ended an injury-plagued season in style by breaking her own Canadian pole-vaulting record by leaping 4.52 metres -- about 14.8 feet -- at a meet in California last weekend.

The jump edged her previous best of 4.51 metres set a couple of years ago.

"It meant so much more this time around," she said in a phone interview from San Diego, where she now lives.

"The past couple of years, I have really struggled with injuries. That's why this record means more to me than any other time I've broken the Canadian record or set a personal best before."

The leap is a huge step as Ellis begins her journey to qualify for the Summer Olympics in Beijing next August. It also helps erase a disastrous showing at the Pan-American Games last month in Brazil, where the 27-year-old missed all three attempts at 4.20 metres and was prematurely eliminated from competition.

"I got home from the Pan-Ams and I almost said I'm going to just shut my season down," she said. "But there was something inside me that just wasn't satisfied with that."

The Grand River Collegiate graduate put the Pan-Am experience behind her and refocussed for the meet in Chula Vista, a town in southern California. Her vaulting was smooth. Timing impeccable.

"I trained really hard in the past few weeks," she said. "I'm feeling strong, fast, fit and vaulting technically better than ever before."

It has been a trying season for Ellis. A small tear in her hamstring forced her out of action for about three months during the height of the outdoor circuit.

After much rest and rehab, she made her way back in early July, in time for the Canadian nationals and the Pan-Am Games. In retrospect, she thinks she might have returned too soon.

"I think I wasn't ready physically or mentally for that type of competition," she admitted.

"There are some things, looking back, that I would have done differently," Ellis said.

The Pan-Am fiasco cost her a spot on the Canadian team at the World Championships in Athletics, which begin Saturday in Osaka, Japan. Instead of dwelling on her misfortune, Ellis decided to soldier on and take a run at her national record. And the plan worked.

The timing couldn't have been better.

Ellis now heads into the stretch run to the Beijing Olympics full of confidence.

She's taking a three-week break to surf, golf and spend time with husband Russ Buller, who is a competitive American pole vaulter. Then, it's right back to training for the indoor season, and, ultimately, the Summer Games.

As it stands now, International Association of Athletics Federations rules say she needs to clear 4.45-metres to get to Beijing. But Athletics Canada has its own standards and requires vaulters to hit certain heights multiple times at certain meets throughout the next year.

Ellis isn't concerned. She feels prepared and is even talking about reaching new heights -- well into the 4.60 to 4.70 range -- and has her heart set on representing Canada at the Summer Olympics.

"That's my big goal," she said. "I feel like if I am able to get into that range, that I have a shot at a medal."

You mean her husband pole vaults also?

No, I think they mean he is a "competitive pole dancer."
