The weather excuse is getting old. I see plenty of states with warm weather that suck at pole vaulting. I also saw tons of high school kids in New England kicking butt this year.

i like that little chart... numbers like that always amaze me.

Lobinger jumped 4.50 when he was 14 years old... i didn't even start until i was 15.

My niece is gonna start on tuesday, shes 10--she just finished doing the presidential fitness testing, she beat all the boys in pull ups and the shuttle run... i am curious to see how she likes it and gets ahold of the technical stuff at the young age

i wonder what dragila would be like if she started in high school instead of college.

I agree with this and must add to it with we're also very stupid.

One thing I have noticed in Texas this summer, is how popular the vault is at the junior high level. Texas also has a lot of great coaches. I am sure the combination of these 2 factors is a big reason why Texas produces great vaulters year after year.

Coaching is very important from at, or as near as possible to, day one.

Texas is blessed with many really great coaches. Texas also has how many people, 20,000,000... 30,000,000 people? With so many people you are bound to have a lot of great athletes to work with. We have I think just over 4,000,000 people in SC, so a much smaller pool of potential vaulters. Don't take me wrong. There are great athletes in every state.

Go to any state and a certain percentage of the athletes would make great vaulters, male or female. Start them early with a good coach and see how high they fly.

Uninformed maybe, but not dumb. My belief is that above average vaulters are not only among the most gifted athletes, they are also among the smartest. You have to be pretty darn sharp to do all that you have to do... and do it the same way every trip down the runway. No slacker'ds allowed!

Probably the great vaulter that is overlooked now.

What's interesting is that once he cleared 6m, he never went for a PR again unless he had to in order to win...which is how he got his 6.05 PR. He would clear a winning height and then call it a day. I don't know if he could have jumped 6.16, but 6.10 was definitely in his reach.

He had one season in which he jumped 5.90 or higher in every meet except two...where he cleared 5.85 and 5.60. It was over 20 5.90 clearances in a season. Unreal. He used to have the results of that season on his old page, I wish I would have copied it since it was so amazing.

He jumped 5.80 (19'0 1/4") when he was 18 years 7 mo old.

He medaled in every major championship he participated in.

Do you know what the URL was? There are some web sites that store pages for historical reference. Maybe it can be found.
