A Modest Proposal

What if every sponsor (XYZ Athletics for example) had as part of their contract with an athlete...
If at anytime in the future, you admit to, or it is proven that you took banned substances to enhance your performances, all payments paid to you by XYZ Athletics must be repaid in full.

I think that would give athletes a reason not to use performance enhancing drugs... it might work.

Sponsors would have a difficult time actually collecting on that since athletes, aside from sponsorship, are otherwise poor.

A condition that terminates the contract in the event of a positive drug test ought to be enough of a deterrent for most people.

That would pose a problem to a significant number of professional athletes in all sports, because, well, lets be honest...

They would have to perform with a level playing field. Poor them.

Unfortunately, most of the high roller sponsors would cave on this one, because some of the highly marketable athletes (NBA, NFL) would simply refuse to sign the contract and go elsewhere.

A good thought, though.
