inconsistency?

Unread postby newvaulter » Thu Nov 15, 2007 12:37 am

I jumped at an all-comers with Tye this summer where he was using the push technique. I though he looked very fast indeed, and had excellent takeoffs, but his consistency in step was not very good.

Of course it takes time to develop any technique--Tye has been doing carrying pole runs and boxes for 15 years or more I'm sure, and the push for only a few months/years seriously--but I'm wondering if it is harder to keep a consistent step running while pushing the pole?

I was way more consistent pushing the pole. I think it just depends on the individual.[/i]

There will be two groups on Friday night, I will post what I know in the Summit forum (so Tye should be there jumping Friday in one of the two groups).

bulls*** - I probably witnessed over 5000 vaults that way and not one single accident.

I've seen lots of kids jumping with a normal pole carry plant overtop of the box and get rejected or peel off the pole.

Yes, there are a few facilities left out there with lips on the box or a poor runway, and anyone choosing to coach that style needs to teach their kids how to carry the pole or otherwise repair the facility or adapt technique in those situations.

I've watched Ty push and jump high, I'm keeping track of another speedy little vaulter south of here picking up this technique with some pretty good results. Proper facilities and an athlete that this fits, it works.
compete and jump safe, have fun

I just tried this last week for first time My run up was really fast and consisant. I jumped 15'9" from 6 strides on 15' pole. This technique really helps you keep top hand pressure. first day 15'9" I think it's a great variation and a great way to teach some technique.

Pushing the pole is stupid. Note the amount of media it has gotten. Bill Falk (MF Athletic) summed up the pole carry, drop many years ago. Go find it! 1986 I think without going to my library. The book should be required reading for all I think.

Personally, I would have to say the push plant technique couldn't be more efficient than letting the pole drop slowly as you run down the runway. The control factor of pushing the pole I think is an issue, there are too many variables (such as bottom hand grip) than when you just run with the pole tip in the air the whole run. Also, When you slowly let the pole tip drop you won't be running long while the pole is parallel to the track, by that time the vaulter should have reached approximately the speed they are going to take off at (minus the acceleration into the box). My two cents.

Control isn't an issue for anyone who masters this technique (which is easy to do) and most kids are pretty consistent with the bottom hand grip.

If they're not, then it's not a good technique for them!
