how efficient are you

Unread postby VTechVaulter » Fri Sep 30, 2005 10:01 pm

okay so i got bored today while writing a lab. so i wrote a program to determine how efficient a pole vaulter you are by calculating a theoretical maximum height.

Basis is conservation of energy

Assumptions - 100m speed is indicative of runway speed
why this is okay
your top speed is faster than your 100 meter average but you lose some speed when you put a pole in your hands.

assumption 2 - frictional and sound energy losses balance out internal energy gains
why this is okay
because i have no way to account for these values. however my values are working out well

i tested bubka and got that he is 96 percent efficient with a max jump of 6.40 meters

anyway... my reason for doing this is people are always like well so and so jumps higher cuz he holds higher or cuz hes stronger. but now ive used physics to prove how good a "vaulter you are". and the basic conclusion was, faster runners jump higher even if they are less efficient. duh.

so if youd like to know your efficiency. Post how tall you are, your best jump, and how fast you run the 100 meters. and ill reply back.

hmmmm... it appears that my assumption for take off velocity may need some work for some of these cases.... how sad

but according to this your 96 percent efficient.. somewhere right around bubka.. with a max possible jump of 11.9.. we need a better take off velocity for a more accurate representation with you. have any kind of 50 or 60 meter times. or maybe your just an amazing technical vaulter :)

edit:: i gave you 7. m/s runway speed, which is still not very fast, and it dropped to 87 percent. i think the curves are very sensitive down at lower velocities (not to be mean)

I really am pretty slow... but I know I can jump higher than 11'9" :P I've cleared 11'8" in practice.

My PR through the speed trap (15m) is about a 1.99. I really am slow.

okay becca that speed works out better.. at that speed you could jump 13'11, and your currently 81 percent efficient

trey.. again with only 5 lefts your not using all your speed. but. with that fast a 100 meter with a percect jump you could go 6.20m

however since your pr is from 5 lefts, your efficiency is low.. down at 80.8 percent. itd be fun to have a radar gun, to really have a good idea.

Okay Brian, I am 5'9", I've vaulted a best of 4.60m (15'1"), and my 100m is 11.87.
